London-Brighton 2011

Londres-Brighton en Saab 900 Gle automatique de 1979.

Cela faisait des années que j’avais envie de participer à cette mythique randonnée dont j’avais découvert l’existence il y a bien longtemps au London classic car show à l’Alexandra palace.

Ma 900 Gle automatique de 1979 étant la voiture idéale pour participer à ce genre d’événement en toute quiétude, je me suis lancé cette année avec mon fidèle co-pilote André.

Après une visite au pas de course de cette extraordinaire mégapole qu’est Londres le samedi. Nous avons pris le départ au Mercedes World de Brooklands le dimanche pour rejoindre la cité balnéaire de Brigthon en faisant un halte à Parnham pour y découvrir de superbes jardins comme seul les Anglais en ont le secret.

Environ 150 km de pur bonheur au volant d’une voiture d’une fiabilité et d’une régularité déconcertante sur des routes sinueuses et très agréables dans un cadre verdoyant. Pour rappel  j’avais acquit cette auto pour 245 euros (oui vous avez bien lu !) en janvier 2010 à Plymouth et je n’ai jamais rien fait autour ! À la grande surprise de nos amis Anglais, bien que seul équipage étranger nous avions tout de même le volant à droite.

I heard about this event many years ago at London classic car show at Alexandra palace and I think I will do it when I will have the correct car to do it. As I feel my Rhd 1979 900 Gle Automatic purchased in January 2010 in Plymouth for 211 pounds will be the perfect car to do this run relax, we do it this year with my faithful co-driver André fraiture. André fit in my 900 a digital bicycle speedometer (like he do in the “rally” 99) it’s a little sensor glued on the rear brake disc who count each lap of the wheel linked to a small speedometer fixed on the dashboard, it’s quite funny but work perfectly, it’s quite precise, you have not only the speed but of course general and intermediate distance (very useful) and last but not least it’s commutable in Km or Miles!

After a long and extremely hot day in London the Saturday where we climb the 311 steps to reach the top of the Monument erected to commemorate the great fire of 1666 where we had a fantastic view of London and particularly to the Shard (The tallest building of Europe under construction) We take the start of the event at Mercedes World in Brooklands the Sunday morning. As we were the only foreign participants we receive a very warm welcome from the organizers. We really enjoy those small but very comfortable roads (it’s definitely not Belgian roads full of wholes everywhere) after a visit at Parnham where we enjoy beautiful English gardens we down peacefully to Brighton and arrive very proud on Madeira drive where I meet John Broughall from the staff who is member of the Saab owners club and very proud owner of two shiny 99!

Definitely an event that I recommend to anyone, particularly with a so reliable and extraordinary car like my 1979 900 Gle!
